Multimedia industries are witnessing a rapid evolution toward integrating complete systems on a single chip. Standards for multimedia video codecs are significantly increasing in complexity and flexibility, and are emerging quickly. We will review the recent trends in video codecs standards, and move on the lossy and lossless video compression algorithms. Finally, we study for an arbitrary-shaped visual object which is key issue in the newly and forth coming video codec standards. Shape-adaptive orthogonal transform and its accompanied compression algorithms will be introduced.
