Delta-sigma data converters oversample one-dimensional signals as much as 128-to-1 and quantize them at one bit/sample. The single bits are filtered to shape the quantization noise to achieve high-resolution analog-to-digital conversion. The implementation relies on discrete analog components (sampling in time but without quantization of amplitudes). In digital audio, delta-sigma modulators are capable of 20-24 bits of precision at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz.
