Computing and Internet Resources
This page describes the resources on the Unix machines
in the Embedded Signal Processing Laboratory (ESPL) and the
Laboratory for Vision Systems (LVS).
The architecture of the network of Solaris machines follows the
architecture of the Solaris machines in the
Learning Resource Center 1.
We have the same software installed except that we do not have the
Adobe Acrobat, Compass, FrameMaker, ObjectBench, ObjectStore, and
Synopsys tools installed.
We do have some software that the Learning Resource Center does not
have, which are listed below.
Note that each Solaris machine has been assigned a different tasks:
anchovy serves user accounts and is the Web server,
combo serves application programs and the video database,
pepperoni is the FTP site, and
vision handles e-mail.
- Graphic Java Toolkit runs on anchovy only (two licenses)
and is installed in ~arifler/public_html/wetics/applets/classes/gjt.
- ImageMagick
for image and video display, processing, and format conversion
(there are man pages available)
- animate - display a sequence of images
- convert - converts between image and video formats
- combine - combine images to create new images
- display - display an image
- import - capture some or all of an X server screen and save
the image to a file.
- montage - creates a composite image by combining several
separate images
- mogrify - transform an image or sequence of images
- Khoros
for simulating signal, image, and video processing algorithms
by connecting block diagrams graphically
- Kerberos, a suite of secure telnet, ftp, and rlogin tools,
is installed on combo.
- miscellaneous utilities (no man pages available):
Xvgr, bm2font, ccg, coder, h2xs, isexpand, qxchange, tgrind, xvgr
- Mathematica 2.2 only runs on pepperoni
- Matlab 4 runs on all Solaris machines
- Matlab 5 runs on pepperoni and anchovy -- see Marios or Dave
- MPEG-4 decoders and encoders run on all Solaris machines --
a C version and a C++ version are available
- Software
for the LRC Solaris machines
- vdcomp for decompressing compressed PDS image
- Video sequences on /database/image
- X windows utilities (there are man pages available)
- bggen for generating colored backgrounds on X11 displays
- xcmap for displaying the default colormap on X11 displays
- xpaint for simple painting
- xvpictoppm for converting XV 'thumbnail' files to standard PPM format
- Adobe Acrobat tools (available in LRC only)
- Adobe Acrobat Distiller converts a Postscript file to PDF.
Usage is
distill file.ps
- Adobe Acrobat Exchange for annotating PDF files.
Usage is
acroexch file.pdf
- Adobe Acrobat Reader, freely distributable reader for
PDF files.
Usage is
acroread file.pdf
